Training Checklist
Safety checked the overall bike before ride:

Seat and tires – tire pressure

Pedals
-
Straps/harness
-
Footrest
-
Coupling Unit
Gear stuff (check off as rider completes each skill):

Gear shifter, multi speed >>>> Keep pedaling without effort as you
-
change. Gear will not engage immediately >>>> Stop pedaling for a
-
moment. Before going up a hill >>>> Downshift to at least a 3
Brakes (check off as rider completes each skill):
-
For normal conditions >>>> Lightly use front and back pedal brakes.
-
Front drum brake >>>> Use slowly to make sure passenger isn’t getting thrown forward.
-
Parking brake application and release >>>> Always apply when loading/unloading.
-
Adjustable seat >>>> Note 3 positions for passenger.
-
Saddle >>>> Adjustable for the pedaler.
Boarding the passenger – a 2-person job!:
-
Activate the parking brake.
-
Tilt seat forward by opening coupling unit.
-
Footrest >>>> Loossen the quick release levers, remove footrest, or detach one side and swing
-
open. Transfer the wheeler >>>> Use a transfer belt, if you need to.
-
Volunteer #1 lifts the legs/feet of the passenger, while volunteer #2 puts the footrest back in place.
-
Ask passenger to put on the safety harness and helmet (assist, if needed).

Inform the passenger you’re going to tilt seat back. Lock Coupling Unit with parking brake set to
-
lock bike and wheelchair together.
Separating / Connecting the wheelchair from/to the bike:
-
SET THE PARKING BRAKE.
-
SET THE KICKSTAND.
-
DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CORD.
-
HAND ON WHEELCHAIR HANDBAR.
-
Open the coupling unit, then lower the wheelchair slowly.
-
Pull up on BIKE SEAT and frame of bike, and detach the bike from the chair.
-
Using 2 PEOPLE, one on each side of the bike, re-attach the bike to the wheelchair.
-
KICKSTAND IS SET! One person lifts bike seat. The other person guides male receiver into the
female bracket.
Before taking anyone but a fellow volunteer for a ride, you must log 8 total hours of training, including 6 hours on the Duet trike divided between riding as a passenger and riding as a pedaler.
Riding Tips:
-
This is a 3-wheeled bike and handles differently than a 2-wheeled bike.
-
The bike has a wide turning radius, so plan ahead.
-
Never ride the bike without a passenger – it is balanced for loaded operation only.
-
Never stand on the pedals to enter or exit off the bike.
