Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Joy Riders?

A: A biking program for persons with limited mobility.  It is for adults, children, veterans, older adults—anyone who would enjoy a ride!

Q: How does it work?

A: Individuals schedule a ride at one of three locations:

Joy Riders - GAP Trail (Cedar Creek Park, Belle Vernon)

Joy Riders - Five Star Trail (Youngwood/Greensburg)
    Joy Riders - Heritage (Pittsburgh)

Contact joyriderspa@gmail.com for the GAP or Five Star Trails or joyriderspgh@gmail.com for the Heritage Trail.

You will meet two volunteers when you arrive at your designated time.  One volunteer pilot will pedal the Joy Riders bike (with you on board!) The second volunteer will ride along with you.

Q: Can I bring other people to ride with me?

A: Your family or friends can join on their bikes.  All must wear helmets!

Q: How long does a ride last?

A: Expect the ride to be approximately 45 minutes.

Q: How should I dress?

A: Dress for the weather outside and add a layer.  Remember—it will be breezy.   Don’t forget your sunscreen.

Q: Will I wear a helmet?

A: Absolutely!  A helmet will be provided for you unless you have one of your own.  No one (even family and friends) can ride with Joy Riders unless they have a helmet.

Q: Are the volunteers trained?

A: Each Volunteer Pilot has had a 2-3 hour training and an additional six hours of mandatory bike riding with a rider in the front.

Q: What if it rains?

A: It depends.  A downpour, probably not.  Our volunteers have ridden in all kinds of weather.  If you don’t mind sprinkles, let’s ride.   You can reschedule or make a decision when you arrive.

Q: What is the cost?

A: There is no charge for a ride.  Donations are accepted.  Just click on the donate tab on our website to link to donate.
